Description
It is clear that the maximalist demands that Papandreou just repeated during the latest meeting of the negotiators and mediator Niemetz are not acceptable for the Macedonian side. Thus, according to experts and political actors, it is quite expectable that the postponed negotiations for full membership in the Union may stir a political crisis. The SDSM and the BDI will insist on a new parliamentarian majority, but the VMRO-DPMNE is going to compose a new government. The pressure that Greece is strongly exerting before 7 December, when the European ministers are going to decide whether to support the recommendation of the European Commission, is not of concern for the government team only because it has to view the Greek requests for the change of the Macedonian identity. Greece, directly through political actors from Macedonia, is affecting the political stability in the state. Political analysts are becoming louder in openly saying that unless Macedonia resolves the dispute with Greece, there may be soon an internal crisis that could be only resolved via a new parliamentarian majority. The Macedonian ruling and opposition politicians also recommend that after 7 December there is the possibility for a political crisis. The SDSM and its leader Branko Crvenkovski have publicized that they see the plan for bringing down Nikola Gruevski from power exactly in the dispute over the name. Although declaratively Crvenkovski is unambiguously supporting and encouraging his political rival in the negotiations with Greece, he announced his scenario: criticisms for the failed politics on the name backed with social unrests and inter-ethnic tensions. Finally, it should all end with early elections. From the ruling coalition, the Albanian partner BDI is anticipating a crisis after 7 December. It will not stay in Gruevski's Government if it remains outside the EU and NATO even at the cost of becoming opposition. The possible political crisis is actually a postponement of the announced hot political autumn. Last week we had a culmination when Gruevski sent a letter to his members in the VMRO-DPMNE for mass mobilization and for settling down the accounts with the transition politicians.
